Sunpower, Inc., an Athens-based company, announces the grand opening of its new $3 million facility. The newly renovated 38,500+ sq. ft. facility is located in the southeast section of the State Side Technology Park.
Sunpower has experienced tremendous growth over the last few years and anticipates continuing growth due to recent and ongoing contracts with NASA and NASA related projects. In a time when many companies have experienced hard economic times, Sunpower has continued to hire, doubling in size over the past four years to nearly 90 employees. With newly signed contracts, Sunpower also needed to upgrade its manufacturing capabilities, so the decision was made to relocate.
Sunpower is a world leader in free-piston Stirling engines, cryocoolers, and linear compressors integrated into environmentally friendly, long-lived and high efficiency solutions. Applications include remote power generation, combined heat and power generation (cogeneration), portable electric generators, medical devices, and nuclear material detection devices. The company was incorporated in 1974 by William Beale, inventor of the free-piston Stirling engine. Sunpower remains a privately held corporation.
